Virginia Highland
The Virginia Highland neighborhood, located northeast of Downtown Atlanta and a quarter mile from Midtown/Atlanta Beltline, comprises original streetcar suburb character with walkable, tree-lined streets, and 1920s bungalow houses. Initially developed in 1893, Virginia-Highland (VaHi) in northeast Atlanta emerged as one of the city’s original ‘trolley suburbs.’ The neighborhood’s boundaries – Briarcliff Road to the east, Ponce de Leon to the south, the BeltLine and Piedmont Park to the west, and Amsterdam Avenue to the north – were officially established in the early 1970s after a prolonged battle prevented the Georgia Highway Department from constructing a four-lane freeway through the community. The cleared land along Virginia Avenue intended for the interstate was transformed into John Howell Memorial Park. The name Virginia-Highland originates from the central crossroads of Virginia Ave NE and North Highland Ave.
Virginia-Highland boasts numerous remarkable buildings and public spaces. The city’s oldest continuously operating fire station, Fire Station #19, is located here. The Ponce de Leon Library serves as both a knowledge hub and a polling place for many residents. VaHi is home to four public parks: John Howell Memorial Park, Orme Park, and The Triangle are City of Atlanta Parks, while North Highland Park is owned and maintained by VHCA. The Virginia-Highland Civic Association (VHCA) is led by a board of elected volunteers who dedicate their time to Parks, Planning, Fundraising, and Social events. VHCA serves as the community’s official (though not exclusive) and formal representative on city regulatory matters such as development, land use, zoning, festival permitting, special events, alcohol licenses, legislation, and other quality-of-life issues affecting daily living in VaHi. All neighborhood residents are eligible for VHCA membership.
Amidst a diverse blend of home styles, ages, and underlying residential zoning, the trendy neighborhood features several places of worship and a vibrant, historic commercial corridor with restaurants, butcher shops, boutique shopping, yoga studios, art galleries, and more.
