Originally settled by Samuel M. Kirkwood in 1851, the neighborhood officially took shape in 1890, quickly gaining popularity as a sought-after residence for Atlanta’s affluent citizens. Many of the splendid Victorian homes constructed during this era still stand, exemplifying some of the city’s finest architectural gems.
In the early 1900s, Kirkwood experienced significant growth, witnessing the construction of numerous residences and businesses. Notably, the neighborhood became the residence of choice for influential figures, including politicians and business leaders.
During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Kirkwood played a pivotal role in civil rights activism. It served as a hub for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and notable leaders like Julian Bond made Kirkwood their home during this transformative period.
Presently, Kirkwood thrives as a close-knit community with a robust sense of camaraderie. The neighborhood boasts green spaces such as Kirkwood Park and Bessie Branham Park, along with community gardens. The Kirkwood Community Association, established in 1975, actively works to preserve the neighborhood’s historic charm and fosters community engagement through events and activities.
Dining and shopping options abound in Kirkwood, with a diverse array of local businesses, including a vibrant farmers’ market. The annual Kirkwood Wine Stroll highlights the community’s local businesses, and the Kirkwood Farmers Market, held weekly from May to October, adds to the neighborhood’s vibrancy.
Accessible via MARTA, Atlanta’s public transportation system, Kirkwood is a short drive from downtown Atlanta. Offering historic charm, a strong community spirit, and convenient amenities, Kirkwood stands as a desirable locale for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
